Bollinger Vieilles Vignes Françaises Brut Vintage 2013 Champagne 75cl

Vieilles Vignes Françaises 2013 is an assembly of 100% Grand Cru Pinot Noir grown in two clos within the village of Aÿ. These two vineyard parcels - Chaudes Terres and Clos St Jacques - somehow survived phylloxera, the ungrafted vines giving us a rare snapshot of the history of the region, before the ruinous aphid devasted the region's vineyards in the 19th century. Bollinger has only created the Vieille Vignes Françaises as an individual cuvée since 1970 and it is a representation of a bygone era - reminiscent, extraordinary, and moving.

Fermentation occurs entirely in old barrels. Only 2477 bottles of this exclusive champagne were produced. Over the years, its uniqueness and scarcity have made it one of the most sought-after champagnes.

97 Points - William Kelley, Wine Advocate: "A brilliant wine, Bollinger's 2013 Blanc de Noirs Vieilles Vignes Françaises is finer boned and more elegant than the powerhouse 2008, but it is still one of the most powerful, intensely flavored wines produced in the region. Wafting from the glass with a deep bouquet of golden orchard fruit, honeycomb, baking spices, orange oil and ripe stone fruits, it's full-bodied, broad and fleshy, with a layered core of fruit girdled by racy acids. Concentrated and vinous, it concludes with a long, saline finish."

95 Points - Antonio Galloni, Vinous: "The 2013 Vieilles Vignes Francaises is a powerhouse. Deep in color, the 2013 is rich and ample in feel. Apricot, spice, orange jam, cedar, dried herbs, ginger, honey and leather all meld together in a VVF that is decidedly opulent and vinous, despite the cool season and harvest that took place on September 27, late by present-day standards. Sadly, production has decreased steadily since 2008. Accumulated drought has been a challenge. Those conditions are, of course, amplified by the walls of the clos in these two parcels and the naturally warm climate of Aÿ. I find the 2013 decidedly exotic and a bit on the heavy side. Those lucky enough to own it will experience one of the most distinctive wines in all of Champagne."
Grape: Pinot Noir
2013 was characterised by a particularly late growing cycle. The long winter was followed by a very cool, late spring. Flowering didn't start until the start of July, which hadn't happened in Champagne for many years. Fortunately, summer had glorious sunshine with record temperatures and very low rainfall, which was perfect for ripening Pinot Noir. The October temperatures were cool and the resulting harvest was elegant and fresh, with all the signs of a classic vintage.
A deep, golden colour, this exclusive champagne presents aromas of quince jam, fresh hazelnut, and mirabelle plum. Candied lemon peel and sweet spices follow, with notes of Tonka beans present on the finish. The palate is lively and ample with a hint of sea air which rounds off this generous champagne.
Vieilles Vignes Françaises 2013 can be paired with the finest dishes such as caviar, veal, or venison. It also makes an excellent companion to a truffle-based dish. It is best served between 10 and 12°c.
