Champagne Type

Understanding the difference between Vintage, Non-Vintage (NV) and Multi-Vintage Champagne helps you choose the perfect bottle — whether you’re celebrating today or building a collection. The three Champagne types include; Non-Vintage, Vintage and Multi-Vintage.

Non-Vintage Champagne (often labelled NV) is the House signature and blends wines from several harvests to achieve a consistent house style year after year. Ageing is a minimum of 15 months in bottle, often longer for complexity. A Non-Vintage is excellent value and the best way to experience a Champagne House’s signature flavour; the cornerstone of every producer’s range and a perfect choice for everyday celebrations.

A Vintage Champagne (or Millésime) is made only in outstanding years when grapes are exceptional enough to stand alone. Rich, layered and expressive, showing the character of that single year. Aged for at least 3 years; top vintages mature beautifully for decades. Ideal for gifting, collecting, or celebrating milestone occasions. Vintage bottles represent Champagne at its most luxurious and age-worthy. Dom Pérignon only produced Vintage Champagnes.

A newer concept, the Multi-Vintage Champagne, takes non-vintage blending to another level, mixing reserve wines from several, defined years, often added to the label, for added depth and individuality. They are often more complex than a Non-Vintage, yet approachable and consistent. Famous examples include Krug Grande Cuvée and Laurent-Perrier Grand Siécle, where each edition showcases artistry and balance.
