Austria

Austria is a beautiful and small country which gives origin to some unique grapes like the Gruner Veltliner, but there is more to discover. Most of the Austrian wines come from the eastern part, close to Vienna and wines are mostly dry white wines. Although, some sweeter wines are also produced such as the world-class Riesling. There are 36 approved wine varieties in Austria, 22 white and 14 red, approved for the production of Qualitatswein (quality wines) and Pradikatswein (sweet wine).

Austria offers excellent sites for growing internationally known varieties such as Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Traminer, Pinot Noir and the most known Gruner Veltliner. Viticulture and grape breeding dates back in time in Austria and the Federal Institute for Viticulture and Pomology at Klosterneuburg, which celebrated its 150th birthday in October 2010. It is the oldest wine-growing school in the world.
