Bollinger RD 2002 Vintage Champagne released on 25th March 2014. Bollinger RD, comes from the term Récemment Dégorgé, or recently disgorged. Made in very limited editions. Bollinger’s new chef de cave, Gilles Descôtes, pointed to the widely acclaimed “great vintage” represented by 2002 as giving the house confidence to bottle in a standard 75cl format as well. In keeping with the Bollinger house style, R.D. 2002 is made predominantly from Pinot Noir, balanced by 40% Chardonnay. Bollinger R.D. 2002 displays its disgorgement date of 19 September 2013 on the back label.

The impact of this recently disgorged approach on the Champagne’s character gives an “incredible freshness in the mouth, combined with a very large palate of flavours, including tertiary notes, which are very unusual in a wine that fresh", Bollinger president Jérôme Philippon. Dosage: very low: “Extra Brut”, 3 to 4 grams per litre.

'Very powerfully so but with excellent acidity and lift on the palate. A nod to British taste for seriously mature champagne? This wine should not be served too cool. It has real weight - though does not taste heavy. I loved it on first release as Grande Année and it is less austere now. A bit mellower and more open though still with the deep throat salve sensation on the finish.' 19/20 Jancis Robinson
Grape: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir
Blend of the 2002 vintage: 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay. 23 crus: 71% Grands crus, 29% Premiers crus.
To the eye: golden with subtle highlights. To the nose: aromas of stewed ripe fruit, particularly quince, but also a discreet note of honey. These are followed by roasted notes and cocoa, which give way to flavours of star anise and nutmeg. To the palate: full-bodied attack. Powerful but well-balanced, with persistent flavour. Mineral finish with touches of lemon revealing a pleasing bitterness. 'Very powerfully so but with excellent acidity and lift on the palate. A nod to British taste for seriously mature champagne? All types of risotto, especially mushrooms or truffle risotto. Venison. Old Comté or Swiss Gruyère. Bollinger R.D. will enhance all gourmet cuisine but its aura is such that it creates a special occasion on its own. Offering it as a gift is a sign of a great friendship. In order to fully appreciate its unique style, bouquet and aromas, it is best served at 12°C, or more. Bollinger R.D. can be enjoyed right away to appreciate the exceptional freshness due to its recent disgorging; you may also choose to let it mature further: its ageing potential is endless.

R.D. stands for Récemment Dégorgé and although Bollinger is not the only Champagne house that sometimes ages its vintage wines on the lees for longer than the usual three years, this has become a legendary wine. The style was created by Madame Bollinger in 1961 with the 1952 vintage. Although it is usually assumed that this prolonged ageing is beneficial, the precise date of degorgement is important, and it is not Bollinger’s practice to disgorge every R.D. cuvée at the same time. Enthusiasts argue that the extended period of lees-ageing preserves the freshness and magnifies richness; however, others believe a vintage wine is fully mature when originally disgorged, and will not benefit from further bottle-ageing. The outcome will vary depending on the vintage, as well as other factors such as storage.
