Select delicious wines and feel confident that they will go down well with either Chicken, Turkey, Beef or Vegetarian or Vegan foods for at Christmas this year.

For the perfect wine pairing for roast turkey with all the trimmings, consider selecting a wine that has enough body to stand up to the weight of the meal, with enough fruit to complement the cranberry sauce and other sweet condiments. Zinfandel, New World Pinot Noir, Zweigelt or lightly oaked Spanish reds all work well. For white wines, try full but fresh wines that have a rich fruit profile and possibly a hint of oak. Marsanne, Viognier or a Pouilly-Fuissé are perfect choices.

If pairing wine with roast goose, consider the fattiness of the bird - often it is a white which will do the best job of cutting through it. A concentrated Pinot Gris is a perfect choice, especially something from Alsace. Choose a Pinot Noir with ample fruit and acidity if your preference is for red - it will complement the slightly gamey flavour of the goose.

Roast chicken is the perfect excuse to indulge in a luxurious premium Chardonnay. Whether your preference is for old or new world, it is hard to go wrong. A cru Beaujolais such as Brouilly is a top choice for pairing red wine with roast chicken.

A roast rib of beef calls for a more powerful red wine. If serving the meat pink, our recommendation would be for classic European reds - especially Bordeaux, Tuscany or Rioja. For more well-done beef, something with juicier fruit and plusher tannins might work better, like a big Malbec from Argentina or a bold Cabernet Sauvignon.

Not forgetting vegetarian roasts, which often rely on herbs and seasonings for flavour. This would be a lovely opportunity to drink something that can echo those notes. On the whites, Châteauneuf-du-Pape blanc is a great option. Southern French reds like a premium Côtes du Rhône can work well, and this could also be an opportunity to explore off-the-beaten-track Spanish wines like a Monastrell from Alicante.

For smoked salmon, opt for something crisp and clean. A classic Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc, Albariño, dry Riesling or Chablis are all great options. For a roasted salmon, seriously good rosé is a perfect pairing, and fruity Pinot Noir is a tried and tested red wine match. Other seafood dishes (lobster, scallops, turbot) should have a lovely rich sauce and be paired with the finest white Burgundy or a similar rich, dry white like the incredible white Supertuscan Batàr from Querciabella.

Christmas pudding and mince pies work beautifully with Pedro Ximénez sherry. For Pavlova or meringue roulade, try the legendary sweet Vin de Constance from South Africa.

With a cheese board, Port is the obvious choice, and a brilliant one too - whether Vintage or Tawny. For something different, try Ratafia from the Champagne region: a blend of brandy and unfermented grape must which is matured in cask. If sweet drinks are not to your taste, Amarone is a great match with hard cheeses and is a fascinating wine to decant and sip slowly over the course of an evening.
