Meerlust Rubicon Vintage 2016 Red Wine Magnum 150cl
Meerlust Estate Rubicon is an iconic Bordeaux-blend from Stellenbosch, South Africa. The 2016 is a blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. 2016 was dry but also quite cool, with Cabernet Sauvignon not ripening as easily or evenly as normal. Indeed, the 2016 has the lowest-ever proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon for Rubicon. As a result, this is approachable young and is a good candidate for medium-term ageing, if not the 2 to 3 decades that other vintages can handle. As the wine is so delicious now, this is possibly an irrelevance.
Meerlust estate has been part of the Myburgh family since 1756, now under the custody of Hannes Myburgh. They are widely regarded as the pioneers of the Bordeaux-blend in South Africa, when Nico Myburgh visited the Bordeaux region in the 1970s and noted climatic and soil similarities between there and his homeland on the coast of South Africa. By 1980, Meerlust produced the first Bordeaux-blend from the region, and an icon was born.
