Penfolds Grange Bin 95 Red Wine 2014 is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy, Grange is arguably Australia’s most celebrated wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. Crafted utilising fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and structured Shiraz grapes, the result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as one of the most consistent of the world’s great wines. With an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951, Grange clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climates of South Australia.

2014 had above average winter rainfall giving healthy soil moisture profiles to vines across South Australia. Spring in the Barossa Valley was the windiest in 47 years with significant heat records set. Warm conditions continued throughout the summer however just as vintage was about to commence, extreme rainfall occurred in the Barossa Valley and Clare Valley, slowing the harvest. This extra time allowed the grapes to ripen evenly with good flavour and tanning development. Across South Australia, shiraz benefitted from the long spell between veraison and harvest with grapes exhibiting brightness, crisp acid retention and impressive fruit quality overall.
An indulging, aromatic nose with umami expressions of shiitake mushrooms, hoisin, dry-aged beef and game meats. An unmistakeably youthful nose with awakened primary fruits and stylish oak. On the palate, this wine is savoury, not fruity with flavours of slow-cooked beef ragout, chicken liver game terrine and integrated oaked spiciness. The finish is long and lingering with an incredibly memorable aftertaste.

The development of Max Schubert's Grange is a modern tale of imagination, a battle against the odds of redemption. It began with a side trip to Bordeaux in 1949, where a wine 'capable of staying alive for a minimum of twenty years', first entered Schubert's mind. His first experimental vintage in 1951 began a new way of thinking that would eventually lead to a signature wine style, but not before Grange was discredited and Max Schubert forced to make the wine in secrecy.
