1999 was an exceptional vintage, with sunlight and warmth playing a vital role in its success. The region's average temperatures were significantly higher than in the previous 60 years. Following a series of Spring frosts and hailstorms, flowering took place in the second week of June, which led to an even fruit set and the potential for a prosperous vintage year. Despite a cool and rainy Summer, the harvest still had promise, and Salon's decision to harvest early meant they avoided heavy rainfall and allowed the vital concentration of flavours and acidities to remain.
Subtle notes of May blossom, white peach, almond, and brioche are present on the palate. Chalky mineral aromas offer a glimpse of the complexity and depth of the Champagne. The Salon 1999 is elegant and self-assured and manages to stay both enigmatic and delicate.
